Hainan - Asia’s emerging M.I.C.E. destination
Home of the Boao Asia Forum since 2001, Hainan Island off China’s south coast has become known for being host of Miss World and for welcoming Kevin Rudd on his first official visit to China.
Hainan’s recent history of hosting some of the world’s most famous annual events has placed China’s island province on the map as an emerging MICE destination.
Since 2001, Hainan has played host to the Boao Asian Forum, a regional political summit that attracts 1,700 delegates from all over the Asia-Pacific. Notable guests include former US President George W. Bush in 2009 and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, whose first official visit to China was to Boao in 2008.
Corporate names including Ford Motor Company, Hewlett Packard, Macquarie Group and Intel are among a list of companies to stage their annual conferences on Hainan. Not limited to corporate functions, the southern resort city of Sanya hosted the Miss World contest from 2003-5 and most recently in 2007, its tropical atmosphere a natural fit for the event.
Hainan features MICE facilities housed within a range of resorts located in the islands three major cities of Haikou, Sanya and Boao. Resorts on Hainan feature conference halls, some capable of hosting up to 1,500 delegates, outdoor meeting areas as well as more intimate boardroom settings. Adding to its growing popularity as a MICE destination is Hainan’s range of golf courses, some designed by former PGA greats.
With its sights focused on attracting the MICE functions of Australian companies, charter flights have recently become available to take delegates directly to and from Australia to Hainan for approximately $A280,000, with Australian passport holders able to enter the tropical destination without securing a VISA beforehand.
