Hainan on the World Stage
The inaugural Boao International Tourism Forum reiterated China's declaration to establish Hainan as one of the world's tourist hot-spots, writes Andrew Starc.
The Boao International Tourism Forum concluded on March 21 with both Chinese and world leaders of the tourism industry vowing work towards making Hainan one of the world's most popular holiday destinations.
Delegates from more than 50 countries and regions participated in the forum in Sanya, the southern resort capital of Hainan. Participants at the forum included leaders from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, the World Travel and Tourism Council, the Pacific Asia Travel Association and tourism ministers from a number of countries.
Under the theme of "Transformation of tourism and cultural industries in the aftermath of the global economic crisis," participants discussed measures adopted by each country to cope with the global economic downturn and trends of the global tourism industry.
In the declaration released by Tan Li, vice governor of Hainan, participants of the forum agreed that tourism is the most dynamic and promising emerging industry. They pledged to conduct joint research on policies and measures to promote the development of the tourism industry, take practical measures to speed up the development of tourism as a pillar industry, create good environment and conditions for the development of the industry and work together to contribute the lasting prosperity and stability of the world.
The Hainan provincial government, the host of the forum, pledged in the declaration to build Boao International Tourism Forum into an international convention and exhibition brand and expects the forum to strengthen exchanges in the industry, promote tourism and culture, and contribute to multi-layer and multi-channel exchanges and dialogues between tourist destinations, between different governments and among enterprises.
Keynote speakers at the forum included Taleb Rifai, the secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Luo Baoming, Governor of Hainan, Cai Wu, China's Minister of Culture and Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President of World Travel and Tourism Council, and Shao Qiwei, director of China National Tourism Administration.
