Miss World Competition uncovers the tropical side of China

This year, some of the world's most beautiful women flocked to Sanya, a seaside city in Hainan Province, China, for the 2010 Miss World Finals.

A rising fashion Mecca, this was the fifth year Sanya has hosted the competition. The finals have drawn international attention to the tropical holiday destination, with contestants given the opportunity to explore a unique side of China.

“Miss World gave me the chance to see the beautiful white sandy beaches of Sanya, the amazing mountain surrounds and the friendly smiles of locals,” said Miss World Australia contestant, Ashleigh Francis.

The month long final was a busy whirlwind of activity. Taken by the rich culture and exotic island scenery, Ashleigh just couldn't resist temptation to extend her stay in Sanya, visiting hot springs and beauty spas, browsing the city's vibrant shopping centers and meeting the cheeky local wildlife.

“This way, I could really experience what Sanya had to offer,” she explained.

While enjoying views of mountains and pristine forests, Ashleigh indulged with massages, facials and a dip in Sanya's hot springs. A major attraction in the region, Hainan's relaxation spas offer Tai Chi, Yoga and Meditation classes.

The beauty contestant ventured to Nanwan Monkey Island, home to 1500 macaques monkeys and discovered the pleasures of shopping in Sanya. The entire island is duty free, offering a diverse mix of street stalls, hotel boutiques and department stores.

In 2012, Sanya will be home to the world's largest duty free store. Ashleigh described her experience in Sanya as every girls dream.

“Having now returned to Australia, I am continuing my Miss World Australia duties relaxed and rejuvenated,” she concluded.

This year, the crown went to United States contestant Alexandria Mills.

Sanya hopes to host future Miss World competitions. It has been announced that the 2011 Miss World competition will be held in Erdos, China.
