Hainan gets ready to the 60th Miss World Competition
Sanya is getting ready to welcome contestants from over 120 countries, as it prepares to host the 60th Miss World pageant. The final will officially begin on October 30 at Sanya’s world-renowned Crown of Beauty Theatre and will be the fifth time that Sanya has hosted the prestigious event.
With the girls currently on a four-week tour around the mainland of China the tension and excitement is building for their arrival on the pristine shores of China’s Island province.
Julie Morley the official chairwoman of Miss World expressed her excitement about returning to Hainan, “We are delighted to be returning to China for Miss World 2010. Miss World has a special relationship with Sanya and there is no better place to begin our 60th year celebrations”.
Sanya is no stranger to big events having held the competition successfully on four previous occasions. It is also the ideal location to celebrate the diamond anniversary of what has become an international institution.
The current Miss World Kaiane Aldorino, who will crown the victor on October 30, spoke eagerly about the contest getting underway, “China is a magnificent experience and I look forward to welcoming all the contestants to this tropical Island paradise”.
Australia will be represented by 23 year-old Sydneysider Ashleigh Francis, who won the coveted title of Miss Australia back in August. Australia has not won the title since 1972 and Ashleigh has been installed as one of the front-runners for the crown. She’s also gearing up for her first trip to China, “I’ve always wanted to go to China, so I am really excited about it”.
Ashleigh will have to overcome the hometown favourite Xiao Tang, who will have the hopes of a nation on her shoulders as she attempts to become only the second Miss China in history to claim the honour of Miss World.
The longest running beauty pageant of its kind, the first Miss World pageant started back in 1951 in London and has since become the worlds most watched annual event, with a worldwide audience of over 1 billion people.
Miss world is just the first of a number of international events that will make up a big twelve months for Hainan. These include the Volvo international Yacht race, which is preparing to sail into Hainan midway through 2011, and is the only Asian stop throughout the open water classic. Hainan is also set to become the home of the Omega Mission Hills world cup of golf, the oldest and one of the most prestigious events in professional golf, which tees off November 24 2011.
