Boao confirms status as nexus of power for global elite

The 2009 Boao Forum for Asia saw eleven of the world’s most prominent foreign leaders descend upon the coastal city of Boao where discussions relating to the impacts of the global financial crisis on Asia dominated.

The list of luminaries included Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, Mongolian Prime Minister Sanj Bayar, Myanmar Prime Minister Thein Sein, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Thomas Somare and Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Korbsak Sabhavasu.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda were also in attendance.

Under the theme "Asia: Managing Beyond Crisis," participants discussed ideas on how to cope with the international financial crisis.

The BFA, established in 2001, is a high-level forum where government, business and scholars promote regional economic integration and bring Asian countries closer to their development goals.
