Kevin Rudd’s first official impression of China

Sun drenched beaches, crystal clear waters, the surrounding greenery of a tropical landscape – these aren’t usually the first things you see when touching down in China – but that’s exactly what welcomed Kevin Rudd in his first official visit to the country, on the tropical island province of Hainan.

The Prime Minister officially stepped down onto Chinese territory when he arrived in the city of Boao, Hainan’s premier business conference city, to attend the 2008 Boao Forum for Asia, shortly after having been elected to the nations top job only months prior. There he met and deliberated not only with Chinese officials, but with more than 1,700 international delegates that had converged on the island for the forum.

After discovering the attractions that Boao had to offer, the Prime Minister then travelled south to the luminous city of Sanya to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, where they discussed Chinese-Australian issues over a refreshing beverage whilst looking out toward the afternoon sun slowly descending past the sparkling South China Sea horizon.
