Traditional Lantern Festival illuminates Hainan

A brilliant show of fireworks lit up the Hainan night sky as the city’s people celebrated China's traditional Lantern Festival, known as the Huanhua Festival, with crowds of revelers filling the streets of Haikou’s Fucheng Town in the Qiongshan District.

Scores of locals took part in the annual celebration immersed in the history and traditions of the island’s people and culture. Festivities reached a crescendo when the sky became illuminated with the explosions of fireworks that reverberated around the city.

Celebrated on January 15th of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Huanhua Festival is celebrated by the exchange of flowers to pray for a happy life in the coming year, with the rose being the most popular flower chosen for exchanging. After exchanging flowers, thousands of people go to visit the flower markets, eat snacks and dance. This festival dates from the Tang Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,000 years.
